Our philosophy at Roxburgh Park Dental Clinic is centred around maintaining the health of your teeth and gums and preventing problems from occurring in the first place. Regular dental check-ups are important in achieving this. Many dental diseases are painless in their early stages and can go undetected, that’s why general checks every 6-12 months are recommended to make sure any small problems don’t become big problems, costing you more time and money later.

General Check Ups

Most general check ups are done every 6-12 months with a full mouth scale and clean.
Children’s Dentistry

At Roxburgh Park dental Clinic, we have a team that is highly experienced in treating children of all ages.
The Child Dental Benefit Scheme (CDBS)
The CDBS is a $1000 benefit for children aged 2-17 years, eligible for Medicare, it covers part of or the full cost of dental services.
If you’re unsure about your child’s eligibility you can contact us and we will check for you, you’ll just need your child’s Medicare number.
Here are some common misconceptions about the CDBS:
- It is given every TWO years, NOT every year.
- The 2 year period starts from the calendar year when your child gets their first eligible dental service.
- The CDBS expires based on the calendar year not financial year. The balance will expire on 31st December of the second year of the 2 year period.
- The dentist will claim the cost from Medicare depending on the dental treatment given.
- The dentist does not decide how much will be claimed, all prices are set by Medicare depending on the services.
- Not all services can be claimed. The CDBS does not cover orthodontic (braces) work or cosmetic work.

When should I bring my child to the dentist?
Your child is ready for their first dental visit as soon as teeth appear in their mouth! One of our friendly dentists can check that your child’s teeth are healthy and growing in the correct sequence. As children get older, its important that they visit the dentist regularly. Not only will this help them get used to regular check ups at a young age, but it will reduce their anxiety towards dental treatment and motivate them to brush their teeth.
Professional Teeth Cleaning

Professional teeth cleaning is done using special instruments, the purpose of it is to clean out all the tartar that builds up on teeth over time. Almost everyone builds up tartar on their teeth and will require professional cleaning to have it removed. Normal tooth brushing and flossing cannot remove hard tartar and a professional clean is needed to remove it. If it is left in place, it can harbour bacteria and lead to gum inflammation (gingivitis) and gum disease (periodontitis). Everyone builds up tartar at different rates, so your dentist will let you know how often you need to have your teeth cleaned professionally. Regular brushing and flossing along with professional teeth cleaning from one of our dentists can ensure good oral health.
Gum Disease

Gum disease, also known as periodontitis, occurs when there is a build up of bacteria and tartar on the teeth that leads to inflamed gums and shrinking of the bone supporting the teeth as a result. Gum disease is a silent and painless disease and many people will not know they have it until it’s at a late stage and they start to feel their teeth getting loose! That is why at Roxburgh Park Dental Clinic we include an examination of the gums with every check up.
Some common symptoms of gum disease include:
• Noticing that teeth have moved or are drifting
• Purple or dark areas on the gums
• Noticing gaps between the teeth
• Receding gum lines • Bad breath
• Swollen gums • Loose teeth

Some people are more prone to gum disease than others and sometimes runs in families. Some things can also increase the risk of gum disease such as smoking and diabetes. Recent research has also shown that gum disease can have a negative effect on other parts of the body such as heart disease and issues with pregnancy.

How is gum disease prevented and treated?
Gum disease can be prevented with regular and thorough oral hygiene at home and at the dentist.
If gum disease has already started, it needs to be managed by a dentist. Luckily in most cases it can be stabilised using professional cleaning. Unlike regular cleans, cleaning for gum disease usually involves deep cleaning of the gums over multiple appointments. If you suspect you have gum disease or would like an examination by one of our experienced dentists, book a consultation today!
Fillings

At Roxburgh Park Dental Clinic, we have a conservative treatment philosophy which aims to preserve as much of your natural tooth structure as possible. Tooth decay causes loss of tooth structure that can eventually become a hole in your tooth. Visiting a dentist can
allow early detection of tooth decay when it’s still in its early stages before it becomes a hole, you and your dentist can then work together with you to arrest the early decay and prevent the need for a filling.
If there is decay that has become a hole, it needs to be cleaned out then filled with an appropriate material. Leaving deep decay unfilled and untreated will cause infection to reach the nerve of the tooth, eventually needing a root canal.
At Roxburgh Park Dental Clinic we use high quality, long lasting materials for fillings. We have a range of shades available, allowing us to match the filling to the colour of your teeth. We can also replace old, defective fillings, replace metal fillings with white fillings if needed and fix broken or chipped teeth.
Root Canal Treatment

When tooth decay or other sources of infection reach the nerve and pulp of the tooth, a root canal treatment is needed to save the tooth. Root canal therapy involves removing the infected nerve and pulp, cleaning of the root canals then filling and sealing them. Without root canal treatment, the bone surrounding the tooth will become infected and abscesses and swellings may form which can be very painful and in severe cases, life threatening.
Root canal treatment gives your tooth a second chance and lets you maintain your natural tooth instead of having it removed. Some root canal treatments may be done in a single visit depending on the situation, but most times root canal treatment will require 2-3 visits with one of our friendly dentists.

Crowns and Bridges

Dental Crowns:
A dental crown is a cap that is placed over a tooth to protect it from further damage and improve its overall function. It can be used in the following situations:
- Loss of tooth structure from decay or previous fillings.
- Teeth that have lost a lot of structure from trauma.
- Following root canal treatment.
- Cracked teeth.
- Where fillings are not sufficient to restore the tooth.
Dental Bridge:
This involves one of our gentle dentists using a high concentration gel applied to the teeth. In some cases a special LASER light is used to activate the gel. It is important that the gums are healthy and teeth are clean before doing this procedure, our dentist may recommend a professional clean if it’s needed. Our dentists will protect the gums of the client during the procedure as well. In office teeth whitening takes up to an hour and a half and results are immediate, generally lasting for one year or longer depending on the situation.

Dentures

Dentures, commonly known as false teeth are prostheses that replace partially or completely missing teeth. Dentures can help with appearance, chewing, speaking and overall oral function. Dentures are custom made to fit snugly into your mouth and are carefully matched with existing teeth and other structures.
Dentures are generally of 3 types:
- Dentures supported by gums only: These are also referred to as full dentures and used in dental arches where all teeth are missing.
- Dentures supported by gums and teeth: Also known as partial dentures, these are used to replace few missing teeth. Partial dentures rest on the gum where the tooth is missing and also on neighbouring teeth.
- Dentures supported by implants: In some situations, dental implants can be placed, providing extra support for the denture and holding it more firmly in the mouth.

To make a custom denture, one of our experienced dentists will need to take a mould of your teeth so a denture can be made to fit your mouth accurately, providing comfort, function and a cosmetically pleasing result.
Tooth Extractions

Often times, teeth are decayed or broken beyond repair and will require extraction. Sometimes extractions are also needed prior to orthodontic treatment. Our experienced team of dentists can provide you with a smooth and painless extraction procedure using local anaesthetic and specialised instruments.
Wisdom Teeth Removal

Wisdom teeth can very often be impacted and not have enough room to fully erupt into the mouth. In such situations, it can develop infection, cause pain, have a cyst grow around it making the jaw bone weak and may push other teeth causing crowding.
To assess your wisdom teeth one of our dentists will order an X-ray, this will give them an idea of the position of your wisdom teeth and nearby structures. Some extractions are straightforward, whereas others may need to be surgically removed because they are stuck in the bone. In any case our dentists are highly experienced in wisdom teeth removal and have had the appropriate training to do them efficiently without you feeling any pain.
